The Peterborough Timbermen started their third season off strong with a 13-12 win over the Six Nations Snipers on Sunday afternoon at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
Newcomer Ty Thompson led the way with six goals and four assists.
Head coach Joe Sullivan was pleased with the team’s effort and singled out several players in particular including both Ethan Woods and Nick Damude in goal. Each played half the game with Woods stopping 29 of 47 shots faced in the first half. Dalton Hill, recently acquired from the Snipers, worked especially hard picking up 11 loose balls and causing three turnovers as well as laying seven hits on his former teammates.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair that ended 6-6. Thompson led with a hat trick. Six Nations scored first and last in the second quarter but Peterborough’s four-goal run in the middle had them up 10-8 at the half.
The second half was more focused on defense. Each team scored twice in the third quarter. Six Nations managed to tie the game at 12 with six minutes left to play in the game, but Thompson scored the game winner with 4:20 left.
2018 team leading scorer Mark Vradenburg contributed a pair of goals and four assists. Joe Hall, Colton Armstrong, Cameron Simpson, Aaron Woods and Tanner Poole also scored.
The Timbermen are back in action in their home opener this Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Children’s Arena (Oshawa) hosting the Toronto Monarchs.
