There was no miracle comeback this weekend as the Peterborough Timbermen fell 16-14 to the Oshawa Outlaws at Children’s Arena on Saturday. The loss allowed the Outlaws to tie the Timbermen and the Toronto Monarchs, 11-4 losers to St. Catharines, for second place.
Once again the Timbermen fell behind 3-0 in the game’s first five minutes. Cameron Simpson sandwiched a Tim Bergin marker to tie the game at three. Oshawa came back with two before Fred Hartley brought the Timbermen back within a goal at 5-4 to close out the first quarter.
Oshawa outscored Peterborough 3-1 in the second for an 8-5 lead. Doug Utting scored shorthanded for the Timbermen, his first of two such goals in the game.
Peterborough came out quickly in the second half, tying the game at eight on consecutive goals from Aaron Woods, Hartley and captain Mark Vradenburg. Unfortunately, Oshawa replied with another three goals to retake the lead 11-8.
The Timbermen tried desperately to push the pace in the fourth, getting as close as 15-14 with under a minute remaining after capitalizing on two power plays. Outlaws’ captain Mike Triolo put the nail in the coffin with a shorthanded goal with 19 seconds left.
Aaron Woods had his best game in his rookie season, leading the Timbermen with a hat trick and six assists. Ethan Woods went the distance in goal.
John St. John scored four goals and one assist for Oshawa. Triolo had three goals and three helpers.
The Timbermen are back in action next Saturday afternoon hosting the Paris RiverWolves at Children’s Arena.
