The Peterborough Timbermen (4-2) picked up a road victory on Saturday evening, defeating the Toronto Monarchs (2-5) 12-7 at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre.
Peterborough was up 7-0 in the second before they allowed the first goal past Landon Kells. They led 8-3 at halftime. Vaughn Harris, in his second game, led with four goals in the first half.
Mitchell Geoffroy, who had his best game of the season with four goals and three assists, started the second half with a shorthanded marker.
“I’m a younger guy and it’s my first year in the league so the fact that we were running five offensive runners really gave me a chance to prove myself to the team,” Geoffroy said. “I started to hit my shots and play the game that I can. I’m learning a lot from our more experienced players that have been to the next level like Joel Matthews and Vaughn Harris and I try to implement that into my game and I think it paid off on Saturday.”
Short four runners, the Timbermen had only four true offensive players in the lineup, but they delivered in a big way.
Geoffroy’s shorthanded goal marked Kells’ second long assist of the game from the goal line.
“The assist was huge for the team and was beneficial in showing Kells’ skills and ability to work with his team,” Geoffroy stated. “He’s an all-around great team player and can help a lot on transition as well as being a big presence in net.”
Toronto tried to make a comeback with a three-goal run in the third but only got to 10-7 before Geoffroy and Harris put the game away with late goals.
Campbell Parker led the Monarchs with three goals and one assist.
Peterborough returns home to Millbrook Arena for a Friday evening 8 p.m. battle vs. the Whitby Steelhawks on Feburary 7th. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 14 and children under five are free. Kids are encouraged to bring their sticks, helmets and balls to play on the carpet at intermission.
