Timbermen hoping to get their sticks cooking for the playoffs

The Peterborough Timbermen fell to the Oshawa Outlaws 22-9 on Saturday afternoon at Millbrook Arena in their final home game of the 2023 Arena Lacrosse League season.

About 100 fans took in the game, and the Timbermen would like to thank those friends, family and fans who made it to one or even ALL games this season. Your support has been a source of comfort and pride for us during a difficult season. As we head into playoffs, we’ll do our best to make you proud.

The Timbermen (1-12) have one more game remaining in the regular season, a Sunday afternoon affair at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena versus the Paris RiverWolves. Paris is the only team the Timbermen beat in the regular season, winning 10-8 on February 25.

Playoffs begin the weekend of April 1. Peterborough will play the first place team in a single-elimination quarterfinal game. Right now, the Toronto Monarchs hold top spot with an 11-2 record. Oshawa and Brampton are right behind Toronto at 9-3 with a game in hand each.

“It’s tough to look optimistic after a loss but all it takes is one game,” said Timbermen assistant captain Steve Bourden. “If the sticks are cooking, the defense is clicking, and we have a hot goalie, we can make definitely make a run just like any other team.”

Saturday, the Timbermen played well in the opening half, trailing 7-4 after the first two quarters before the Outlaws pulled away in the third.

Should the Timbermen draw the Outlaws in the playoffs, Bourden said the key to winning is stopping the offence.

“Everyone on that offence is a threat so we have to focus on our matchups and do a good job being physical and limiting their chances. If they’re going to beat us in transition that’s it but we have to hold those five guys back.”

Cam Milligan scored four goals and five assists to lead the Outlaws.

There has been great improvement from the team throughout the season despite many growing pains, Bourden said.

“We had a lot of youth this year. Look at our first game in Brampton to now and we can see our systems working a little bit better and our offense coming together. We have one last game in Six Nations next week to bring it together and ride it into playoffs.”
