The Peterborough Timbermen lost their fifth game in a row on Saturday, falling 16-9 to the Toronto Monarchs.
The loss drops the Timbermen (5-7) to sixth place in the Arena Lacrosse League standings with just two games remaining in the regular season. All teams will make the quarterfinals.
With a full lineup, the Timbermen played “hard, but not smart,” said head coach and general manager Joe Sullivan. Part of the issue was 10 Peterborough minor penalties compared to six for Toronto, including a stretch of five in row – one resulting in a penalty shot, on which Jordan Dance scored – to end the second quarter.
After ending the first quarter tied 4-4, it was disappointing to head to the locker room down 9-6 at halftime.
Peterborough kept pace in the third period and got within a pair at 11-9, but were then shut out for the final 15:50 of play, while Toronto went on a five-goal run.
“We left Thomas Kiazyk out to face breakaway after breakaway,” Sullivan said.
Jordan Dance led the Monarchs with six goals, while Parker Pipher scored three times and added six assists. Craig Wende got the win in goal.
The Timbermen’s next game is on the road this coming Sunday, March 10 at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena against the Six Nations Snipers (3-9). They return home to Millbrook Arena on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. to host the last-place Ohsweken Bears (2-10). Tickets will be sold at the doors, which open at 1 p.m.
